Desert Locust Intervention

Desert Locust Invasion
As of February 2020, swarms of desert locusts descended in Marsabit County, decimating crops, and devouring grazing land, subsequently affecting the source of livelihoods in a community that depends on livestock for survival. The county continued to experience recurrent waves of invasions of the worlds’ worst migratory pests until June of 2020, when Kenyan authorities contained the spread of the locust.

Our Intervention

With support from our development partners, PACIDA conducted ground surveillance of the situation in Marsabit, relayed data to Kenyan authorities; we conducted ground spraying of the locust to complement the authorities’ aerial spray. We also continue to support the most affected households as through cash transfers to enable them to afford food and basic necessities as they recover from the effects of desert locust infestation.
